Schools Being Mindful

Schools Being Mindful presents a series of online programmes to support student and staff mental wellbeing by introducing a Mindfulness culture within the school, or college community, and the home environment.

A child’s world appears to be more complex and challenging than ever before. Research appears to indicate that stress and anxiety levels in children are increasing year on year, while the impact of electronic distractions, including social media, have been directly linked to an array of problems including poor relationship issues and low self-esteem. A child’s mind can become a ‘battleground’ overloaded with almost continuous stimulation leading to mental fatigue, a lack of sleep and difficulty in paying attention.”.

Why introduce Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is increasingly being brought into schools as it teaches the skills involved in paying attention and being aware, thereby supporting the learning process through:

Mindfulness is also strongly associated with the act of kindliness to both oneself and others and as such can help the development and maintenance of better relationships.

The mindfulness approach has also been demonstrated to be effective in reducing the symptoms of anxiety and depression, and in building mental resilience. It is a life skill.

Teens Being Mindful

The course designed for students aged between 11 and 18 is divided into modules which progressively develop the skills of mindfulness within the context of a trauma sensitive approach.  From a background understanding of mindfulness, the course moves to introducing techniques in recognising and diffusing potentially damaging habitual behaviours, to reading patterns of mental stress in the body and approaching with kindness difficult thoughts and emotions.  Through increasing compassionate awareness students discover not only how to enrich their lives but also the immense power of learning to simply pause and perhaps choose how best to respond instead of reacting to potential problems.

Being Mindful Teachers

Being Mindful Teachers, is a teacher led course (delivered online), consisting of six sessions, each of one hour duration which explores in greater depth many of the techniques introduced in the various Schools Being Mindful programmes in addition to many other mindfulness tools. Each session is support by easy-to-understand notes and a range of audio recordings for home practice.

Training Format

The Alliance Schools Being Mindful programmes are designed to be delivered by teachers with little or no previous experience of mindfulness.  We would, however, recommend that staff become familiar with the course structure and the mindfulness tools introduced by attending one of our pre-course delivery orientation sessions.

For staff interested in further training please see the Being Mindful Teachers programme and the list of other recommended training providers.

We ask that all teachers and teaching assistants presenting an Alliance Schools Being Mindful programme, practice with their students when working with recordings or other exercises.  Not only does this signal to pupils the importance of practice but also gives staff the opportunity to gaining some of the well documented benefits that mindfulness can bring.
