Bullying Doesn’t Stop at the School Gates: Tackling Workplace Bullying with the Power for Good

As Anti-Bullying Week reminds us each year, bullying isn’t confined to the playground. It can happen anywhere, including the workplace. This year’s theme, “Power for Good,” encourages each of us to recognise the influence we have and to use it to create environments where everyone feels safe, valued, and respected.

Understanding Workplace Bullying

Workplace bullying can take many forms. It might look like:

  • Persistent criticism or undermining
  • Exclusion from meetings or social interactions
  • Spreading rumours or gossip
  • Intimidation, humiliation, or unfair workloads

Unlike the occasional disagreement, bullying involves a pattern of behaviour intended to cause distress or exert control over another person. Over time, it can erode confidence, damage mental health, and impact overall wellbeing and performance.

Research shows that employees who experience bullying are more likely to report stress, anxiety, depression, and burnout, and organisations with unresolved bullying issues often experience higher turnover and lower morale.

Recognising the Power for Good in the Workplace

This year’s Anti-Bullying Week theme, Power for Good, is a timely reminder that we all have the ability to influence change, not only through policy, but through culture and everyday actions.

Using our power for good means:

  • Speaking up when we witness unkind or unfair behaviour
  • Listening and supporting colleagues who may be struggling
  • Promoting respect and empathy as part of everyday workplace values
  • Creating safe channels for people to raise concerns without fear of judgement

Small actions can have a big impact, a word of kindness, a supportive conversation, or a willingness to stand up for what’s right can make a real difference.
